#CultureFirst: Jason McPherson

The #CultureFirst series is a chance to showcase the team here at Culture Amp. We asked everyone a few questions which will give you an opportunity to get to know each of us a bit better.

Jason McPherson - Chief Scientist

Jason is a reformed academic psychologist with a mixed background in research, teaching, statistics, organizational psychology consulting and some other stuff.

Culture Amp: What can you do as a CAmper that you haven’t been able to do elsewhere?
Jason McPherson:
I can wear Crocs to work and dash down Collins Street for a flat white. Plus I can help build something that will be used by thousands of companies to try to be their best.

CA: Best day you’ve ever had at work (here or anywhere else)?
JM:
This is a hard one and exactly why I always suggest asking people for top three responses in our surveys :) 1. The day I began working with the Culture Amp founders. I rode to work and found the team working in what appeared to be a co-working flat. 2. The day I sat down with Doug and we made Kendall's tau-c confirm to Ruby logic. 3. All the other days I see new people doing surprising and impressive stuff that I just never predicted in my unconscious or conscious brain.

CA: What do you geek out about outside from work?
JM:
I'm not really a geek so this is hard to answer but I guess it is probably revisiting alloparenting theories of early hominid evolution or eco-anthropology readings at the moment.

CA: What did you want to be when you grew up?
JM:
Too many things. Earliest memories were paleontologist or cosmologist (read: dinosaur and star enthusiast) then a teenage period which I can probably summarize as an interest in being married to Kate Bush (read: complex musical ambitions).

CA: What is something about you not many people know?
JM:
I was a state (age group) BMX champion in the 80s

CA: What’s on your playlist this week?
JM:
Field Music, Jayhawks, Telemann, Beast Wars, Genesis, Explosions In The Sky, Nick Cave ... (a break from Craig David just this week).

CA: Where would you go on an all expense paid trip tomorrow?
JM:
I would circumnavigate the world by sailboat and consider how many laps, islands and circumferentials I'd take in.

CA: What does culture first mean to you?
JM:
Easy one. To me it means a decision that how we achieve what we want to achieve together is just as important as what we achieve.

CA: Do you have any startup / culture idols?
JM:
Eric Cartman - early adopter of stuff.

CA: What was the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
JM:
People rarely do anything for ONE reason.

CA: If you could have one super power, what would it be?
JM:
Time travel. Now. Sorry. Then - then Now.

CA: You pick a magazine up to read – what is it?
JM:
 A magazine.

CA: What’s up next in your Netflix queue?
JM:
Cancelling my subscription.

CA: If you could be a lead character in a movie, who would it be?
JM:
Peter from "What We Do In The Shadows."

CA: How have you turned a setback into an opportunity?
JM:
Being myself.

CA: What was the first and last concert you attended?
JM:
My first concert was Abba when I was very young.

CA: If you won the lottery what would you do first?
JM:
Check the updated priors in my Bayesian model.

CA: Would you take a one way trip to Mars and why/not?
JM:
At my age that would be contentious at home. So. No.
