#CultureFirst: Allie Tamer

The #CultureFirst series is a chance to showcase the team here at Culture Amp. We asked everyone a few questions which will give you an opportunity to get to know each of us a bit better.

Allie Tamer - IT Manager - San Francisco

Allie has been building and leading support teams in the tech world for several years. She's passionate about helping companies retain their culture as they scale, open and honest communication and cotton candy.

Culture Amp: What can you do as a CAmper that you haven’t been able to do elsewhere?
Allie Tamer:
I'm able to have a voice here — which allows me to help shape how we build a Culture First company and help prevent some of the growing pains I've seen other companies struggle with. Oh, and I get to bring Taco (the dog) to work!

CA: Best day you’ve ever had at work (here or anywhere else)?
AT:
It might be the day I got everyone on my team (spread across four offices around the world) to wear fake mustaches to celebrate one teammate's birthday. A few weeks earlier he'd joked that his birthday wish was for everyone to have a mustache as awesome as his -- so I made it happen. I have a great picture of some huge smiles from that day. Or it might be that day I ran into Peter Dinklage in New York for the second time that week and he looked at me like if we ran into each other one more time he might file a restraining order.

CA: What do you geek out about outside from work?
AT:
I pretty much geek out about company culture inside and outside of work...but I do have an alter ego with a blog about horror movies. I'm reviewing one movie a day every day in 2016!

CA: What did you want to be when you grew up?
AT:
A novelist or a poet. I've still got some time left for that, I hope!

CA: What is something about you not many people know?
AT:
I'm technically a beauty school dropout.

CA: What’s on your playlist this week?
AT:
Lots of Alkaline Trio and Airborne Toxic Event with some David Bowie and Billy Joel in there for good measure. Oh, and the original London cast recording of Les Miserables

CA: What does culture first mean to you?
AT:
Culture First means being purposeful about the culture you're building, being receptive to feedback from anywhere within your organization, and being conscious about how the decisions you make might impact your employees and your company culture. It's not about being everything to everyone. It IS about understanding what you are, what you want to be, and what you aren't (or will never be) -- and about being able to embody those things for and with your employees.

CA: What’s up next in your Netflix queue?
AT:
Let me answer this with an anecdote. I had signed in to Netflix on the Apple TV at my dad's house and he was scrolling through the menu options trying to find something to watch. His next words were “What do you watch on here? I look at Netflix's recommendations list and it's like 30 Rock, Frasier, and EVERY HORROR MOVIE EVER.” That's a pretty accurate description.

CA: What was the first and last concert you attended?
AT:
The first was Hootie and the Blowfish with my mom when I was in 6th grade and the last was Jackson Browne for my dad's 60th birthday party. Wow, those make me sound boring. You should know that in between those two are a lot of awesome shows I attended without either of my parents.

CA: If you won the lottery what would you do first?
AT:
With the money or with the knowledge that I'd won? With the money I'd probably pay off my mortgage first. With the knowledge that I'd won I'd probably check with everyone I know first to make sure it wasn't some elaborate prank.
